When my daughter reached college age and classmates would say they couldn't wait to get home to their mother's homemade pie, she would say she couldn't wait to get home to her mother's Sara Lee.
This will come as no surprise to my close friends. They know that somehow my mind never seems to want to stop playing in its idea-filled sandbox long enough to saut a shrimp or pure a parsnip.
Cooking for one is a subject we single women often discuss. One of my friends thinks nothing of roasting a 20-pound turkey, cutting it up in millions of pieces and creating several versions of the original bird to be frozen for future meals. Another friend once confessed to me that her refrigerator had two basic things in it, cat food and wine. She, like many of us, preferred to eat out and let someone else do the cooking.

Stir the salt and brown sugar into water until dissolved. Add the shrimp and refrigerate for 30 minutes. In a medium bowl, whisk the remaining 1/4 cup of olive oil with the chopped cilantro, honey, garlic, parsley, red pepper flakes and wine and set aside.
Remove the shrimp from the brine and rinse thoroughly, then pat dry. Toss the shrimp with the marinade. Transfer the shrimp and marinade to a resealable plastic bag and marinate for at least 20 minutes or up to 45 minutes in the refrigerator.
Preheat the broiler or a grill. Cook the shrimp until just cooked through, about 1 1/2 minutes per side. Arrange the shrimp on plates and top with the mango salsa and cilantro sprigs

If your local grocer doesn't sell toasted almonds, toast them yourself. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spread the nuts on a baking sheet. Toast until fragrant and lightly colored, about 8 minutes, stirring them once or twice. Cool completely before chopping.
Makes 4 servings

Let the cakes cool completely and then cover them, still in the pans, with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 8 hours, or until completely chilled.
For frosting:
In the bowl, using an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and set on medium speed or with a handheld mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and cream cheese for about 2 minutes or until fluffy.
Add the confectioners sugar, orange juice, orange zest and vanilla. Mix slowly so that the sugar doesnt fly out of the bowl. Gradually increase the speed and beat for about 1 minute or until the frosting is smooth.
For assembly:
Remove the cake layers from the refrigerator and invert them on a work surface. You might need to run a kitchen knife around the edges to loosen the layers. Put 1 layer on a platter, glazed-side down

Volunteers usually make their best pie, so no matter the choice, it's sure to be scrumptious. Pumpkin and apple, lemon meringue and peanut butter cup, chocolate or coconut or banana cream there's always an array to choose from, but seconds aren't guaranteed drawing many to the last seating of the evening, when all the pie has to go.
Culinary history dates these suppers back to the 18th century, though a specific 'first' is elusive. In centuries past, meat was reserved for special occasions like town gatherings, says Geraldine Brown of the Vermont Historical Society.
Why chicken? 'Vermont farms raise chickens,' she states simply. The pies were likely made from older hens, slaughtered in the fall; slow cooking tenderized the tough meat, theorizes Molly Turner, writing in Saveur.
The hens may come from the supermarket now, rather than congregants' farms; and the kitchen is likely to sport many more men than a hundred years ago, but the satisfying meal and chance to reconnect with the community endure into our wired era.
Considering the work involved, it's no wonder the suppers continue to occur only once a year. It takes a dedicated crew of as many as 40 volunteers several days to cook the chickens, assemble the pies, peel the squash and set the tables needed to feed upwards of 100 people in under two hours.
'It takes a little timing,' Kelley admits. 'We have a schedule taped to the refrigerator that says who does what, when.' Most suppers include two seatings in one evening. These dinners are fundraisers for the church, so the more folks who can partake of the meal, the better.

Gone, gone, gone! Some evil-doer has either a) stolen the cream (which has my name on it as office rules state they must) or b) thrown a hefty amount of cream into the trash. Who would do such a thing, you ask? Who would have the balls to commit such a serious crime against a writer type? And on a Monday no less! Well, I do have a primary suspect in mind, yet that whole burden of proof thing makes it a difficult case to solve, and, if OJ Simpson got off on murder charges because of a shrunken leather glove, my suspect is bound to be freed in the preliminary hearing. This isn't a crime against humanity, but rather a heinous crime against one kind of person within humanity - those as dependent on coffee as they are of air, food and water. There is a refrigerator dictator among my work peeps, an individual who governs over this chilly communal space with an iron fist, making use of the kitchen seem like a scene from George Orwell's 1984 or perhaps a snapshot into the regimented existence of those living in communist China. So be it. Now, before I jot down one more nonsensical line (which you can blame on the cream-nabber) I am off to do a coffee run.

Remember the vision of the Internet of Things--the idea that all of our devices would have their own IP addresses?
Your refrigerator would report an operating problem through the Internet to some remote data center. All of a sudden, a service technician would knock on your door because your refrigerator called for a repair. To be sure, consumers products aren't quite there yet, but machines in offices and factories are starting to tell us when they need tuneups.
The model under which this is happening is called smart services, and it turns out that the structure is not only relevant to software and automation but is being rapidly applied to knowledge-intensive services. This week, JargonSpy looks at the economics and business models surrounding smart services and why it is likely you will be using them before too long.
I first came to understand smart services last year while working on a book, Mesh Collaboration, that tells the story of a fictional company that sells power generation equipment and electric motors

The Department of Residence Life will make 26 four-person apartments in the new Ridgewood residence halls available to all interested juniors and seniors when the dorms open next semester, ResLife announced on its Web site.
In an earlier interview with the Justice, Vice President of Capital Projects Dan Feldman said that Ridgewood will provide 184 beds total. However, Co-Director of Residence Life Jeremy Leiferman explained that the University will not make all apartments available because of the disturbance expected from the neighboring construction of the new admissions building.
According to the ResLife Web site, all the Ridgewood bedrooms are singles. There are four- and six-person apartments in the three Ridgewood buildings, Leiferman said. Each apartment has a private bathroom, common area and kitchen, which includes a stove, oven, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator and microwave. Each building has airconditioning, laundry facilities and an elevator, as well as a common room in the entry area. Students living in Ridgewood will not be required to be on a meal plan, Leiferman said.
The Web site notes that students could potentially face unforeseen difficulties in the building stemming from the recent construction that will not be apparent until occupancy. Leiferman explained that this is a normal concern for new buildings and that ResLife does not expect major problems. 'Sometimes people move in to a newly constructed building and expect things to be perfect,' he said

But not all will be lost, depending on the kind of food and type of freezer. Food in a full freestanding freezer generally will stay frozen longer than a freezer with refrigerator according to the Food and Nutrition hotline Michigan State University's Extension, Oakland County.
Refrigerated foods that should be OK or can hold at room temperature (above 40 degrees) for a few days are:
n Fruit and produce that is not moldy or slimy and hasn't been cut.
n Butter and margarine
n Hard and processed cheese (block-type such as Parmesan)
n Fruit juice (carefully inspect because it can grow mold quickly)

Home-grown sweet potatoes need to be heat-cured after harvest if you want to store them for winter use. Curing means maintaining them at around 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity for five days. We generally set up a makeshift tent in the garage with an oil reservoir electric heater and a mist humidifier and a hygrometer and thermometer. For best results, don't wash the sweet potatoes before curing.
Once cured, they'll keep fine in your basement or pantry. Never put sweet potatoes in the refrigerator or expose them to temperatures below 55 degrees.
Since some potatoes can be nicked by mice or the digging shovel, I look for ways to use these imperfect tubers first. Why not soup? African sweet potato soup is a great one-dish vegetarian meal. In Africa, the greens used might be the end leaves and tender tips of the sweet potato vine itself, or the round leaves of the tropical Malabar spinach vine. But Swiss chard works fine

travelers are bringing coolers on road trips and to hotels and resorts so they can reduce restaurant spending.
Bruce Chadwick of North Palm Beach, Fla., brings an electric Coleman cooler that plugs into the car's cigarette lighter on vacations with his wife and 5-year-old son. They recently brought it into their hotel at Disney World to save the $10-a-night refrigerator fee, he says.
Donna Bilkey of Imperial, Mo., says she got upset when she paid $20 for 'a few juices and two muffins' for her family of four at the tony Amelia Island Plantation Resort last year in Florida. So they went to the nearest Wal-Mart, bought a disposable Styrofoam cooler and filled it with fruit, cheese and snacks
