BY A STAFF REPORTER LOS ANGELES, CA - As part of its continuing programs to save energy, on July 31, 2008 Southern California Edison (SCE) celebrated its customers contributions towards this end by recycling its 700,000th refrigerator. In the past 15 years SCE has collected thousands of old and inefficient refrigerators and freezers and sent them to be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. The Organization along with its recycling contractor ARCA California Inc. hosted a tour of ARCA s facilites at Compton to demonstrate the demolition and separating process and explain the environmental, financial and energy saving benefits of SCE s Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Programs. SCE pays $50 to customers to encourage them to get rid of the old household energy hogs an old, inefficient refrigerator or freezer. The utility, which over the past 15 years has collected 700,000 refrigerators and freezers in an effort to encourage conservation, picks up the unit at no charge to the customer and recycles it in an environmentally friendly manner. Most people don t realize that they re spending about $300 a year to keep that six-pack of soda cold in that spare fridge, said Gene Rodrigues, SCE s director of Energy Efficiency. The Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Program makes it easy to save money, energy and help protect the environment. Refrigerators use about 18 percent of the electricity in a typical California home; a refrigerator or freezer that was purchased before 1993 can use up to 50 percent more than a new ENERGY STAR-qualified model
