Right now there are peak energy usage hours, with people using most of their energy in the late afternoon and early evening. LG-E said eventually customers will be charged more for using energy during peak times and less in the morning and late -evening hours, so GE has developed a new smart meter that will recognize when the peak energy usage times are.
That meter will work with new General Electric Smart appliances.
The meter will send a wireless signal to the appliances telling them when the low energy use times are. For example, a dishwasher would run late at night and a washing machine and refrigerator would do the same.
'Today, when you run a refrigerator, it really just runs and you don't understand what electricity you're using when it does certain things,' said GE vice president of technology Kevin Nolan. 'Now you'll have control of when your refrigerator might defrost, or when you want to harvest the most ice, or when you want to pull down the refrigerator temperature in that refrigerator.'
Don't buy unwrapped cooked seafood displayed in the same case as raw fish, as cross-contamination may have occurred. When buying frozen seafood, make sure there are no ice crystals on the package indicating the product has been previously thawed. Use packaged, frozen seafood before the expiration date. Milk - Choose milk in cardboard cartons or non-translucent jugs. Never store milk in the refrigerator door where it is susceptible to warmer air as the door is opened and closed. Discard all kinds of milk one week after opening, no matter when the expiration date is. Eggs - Never eat raw eggs. When buying, choose a carton that is cold and make sure the eggs are clean and free of cracks
