A factory in Italy that used to produce refrigerators will be transformed into a facility that will manufacture solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbine blades. The factory was recently transferred from Swedish manufacturer Electrolux to Italian company Energia Futura. Though the transformation will see jobs at the plant cut from 450 to 370, Electrolux originally planed to close the facility all together.
According to the European Wind Energy Association, Italy holds approximately 5% of wind market in the European Union and less than 1% of the European PV market according to SolarBuzz. These figures however are expected to rise as Italy's feed-in tariff takes hold and helps the markets grow.

Whirlpool Corp. and LG Electronics have agreed to a partial resolution of a dispute over a patented ice maker part, the two companies said Thursday.
The resolution relates to two Whirlpool (nyse: WHR - news - people ) patents on ice maker fill tubes used in refrigerator freezers with automatic icemakers. LG agreed to change the design of the fill tubes it uses in the refrigerator models accused of infringement.
The two companies also agreed to drop the fill tube patents from the action before the International Trade Commission and from a related court action between the companies.
The settlement leaves unresolved a part of the complaint before the International Trade Commission involving Whirlpool's patent on the storage and delivery of ice through a refrigerator door. That is scheduled to go to trial in December
